abstract
A performance model, based on continuum mechanics utilizing advanced damage, fracture and computational mechanics to obtain accurate predictions of damage evolution in laminated composite structures during ballistic impact was developed. The model was implemented to a global three-dimensional finite element computer code to predict the evolution of damage. The resulting algorithm was utilized to predict the types of damage events experimentally observed in laminated composite plates subjected to impact, and comparisons were made to two experimental results.
