abstract
The Alkali Metal Thermal to Electric Converter (AMTEC) is a thermally regenerated sodium concentration cell that is now under development to converter thermal energy directly into electrical power for space and terrestrial applications. The principles of AMTEC operation have been fully described (Weber 1974, Hunt 1975) and experiments have verified the basis for a general performance analysis. The converter cell power density is directly related to the sodium concentration (activity) ratio that is produced across the ''-alumina solid electrolyte (BASE). This concentration coupling of the low concentration side of the BASE and the condenser heat sink.
