EFFECT OF OXIDATION ON DAMAGE EVOLUTION IN TITANIUM MATRIX MMCS Conference Paper uri icon

abstract

  • This paper develops a continuum mechanics model for predicting time dependent surface oxidation in continuous fiber metal matrix composites using conservation of mass and Fickian diffusivity. The oxidation model is adjoined to a linear thermoelastic model for predicting stresses in the oxidized surface layer. Due to the complexity of the problem, solutions are obtained computationally by the finite element method. Example results are obtained for SiC fibers embedded in both Ti-15-3 and Ti-21S matrix material, and for temperatures ranging between 600C and 800C. Limited comparisons to experimental results indicate that the model may be appropriate for use in life prediction methodologies for metal matrix composites subjected to environmental degradation. 1994 Elsevier B.V.
