Interference of independent laser beams at the single-photon level: a field-theoretic description Academic Article uri icon

abstract

  • It has been shown experimentally that two independent laser beams can interfere at light levels at which the probability of more than one photon being present simultaneously in the optical path is negligibly small. This letter presents an explicit description of these interference effects using the techniques of quantum-field theory. It is shown that the interference arises because the detected photon can come from either of the two beams. 1993.
