Surface polariton effects in spontaneous Emission II. Effects of spatial dispersion Academic Article uri icon

abstract

  • The radiation characteristics of atoms or molecules placed close to the dielectric surface are studied with full account of the spatial dispersion of the dielectric. Both the cases of plasmon polariton and the exciton polaritons are treated. The appropriate response functions are calculated and used to derive an analytic expression for the widtn of the excited state. The numerical results show that spatial dispersion reduces considerably the width from that one in the absence of spatial dispersion. It is found that spatial dispersion effects become more pronounced as the distance of the atom from the surface decreases. Copyright 1978 WILEYVCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA
