abstract
An isotropic medium, having atoms with m degenerate sublevels, when subjected to a magnetic field can induce birefringence in the medium, resulting to probe polarization plane rotation. The enhancement of the magneto-optical rotation (MOR) of a linearly polarized light is demonstrated by performing detailed calculations of a four-level40Ca system with relevant transitions. The Doppler broadening was included and the case when the probe and control fields are counter propagating was considered. The polarization rotation of the probe is determined by calculating the transmission through a crossed polarization analyzer.
