abstract
We demonstrate the occurrence of the well-known Wigner distribution for density of states, which arises commonly in nuclear physics, in a class of problems in quantum optics. We show how such a distribution can be probed, and analyze the effects of dissipation on this distribution, one of which is to make the underlying random matrix non-Hermitian. 1997 The American Physical Society.
