Vacuum-induced coherences in radiatively coupled multilevel systems Academic Article uri icon

abstract

  • The production possibility of interference effects in spontaneous emission by radiative coupling between multilevel atoms is described with respect to near-degenerate transitions. Two identical V systems having a pair of transition dipole matrix elements orthogonal to each other were used to demonstrate the possibility. The choice of orthogonal dipole matrix elements enabled the isolation of the effects of vacuum-induced coherences (VIC) in the radiative coupling between multilevel atoms having nearly degenerate transitions. The origin and consequences of the new interference terms are also discussed.
