abstract
The paper presents a model of the atomistic origins of acoustic emission (AE) waveforms from the primary deformation zone of a machining process. The model is based on a statistical mechanistic framework. It quantifies the release of AE from annihilation of dislocations in the shear zone. The experimental studies show that model correctly captures the bursts and other salient patterns of measured AE waveforms. The model will contribute to the extraction of features that are highly sensitive to anomalies such as microdynamic instabilities in machining. Significant quality and yield improvements in precision machining and other related manufacturing operations are possible from using these features.
