Use of transition correlations for three-dimensional boundary layers within hypersonic, viscous flows Conference Paper uri icon


  • A parabolized Navier-Stokes code is written to investigate the three-dimensional nature of boundary layers. The geometry of interest is a sharp cone, of elliptical cross-section, at zero angle-of-attack. The flow of interest is a calorically perfect ideal gas at free-stream Mach number of 4. Shock-fitting is used to avoid shock-induced numerical oscillations. The Vigneron technique is used within the subsonic layer to avoid departure solutions. Cones of various cross-section eccentricities are investigated. Local crossflow separation is observed. A basic-state correlation is used to predict the locations of transition from laminar to turbulent flow. The results of this investigation will be useful for designing experiments and further numerical investigations.
