abstract
A wave transformation model, SWAN, is used to simulate wave conditions with a high spatial resolution in Penobscot Bay and Machias Bay in the coastal Gulf of Maine. The motivations are to provide forecasts to assist mariners, recreational boaters and others, and to develop a database of hindcast information that can be used for engineering applications. Since NOAA provides both hindcast and forecast wind fields, an automatic system is set up to provide 12-hour hindcast and 48-hour forecast wave fields, which may be used to prevent future coastal disasters. Model results are compared with several field measurements to evaluate the reliability of the wave hindcast and forecast system.
