Thermodynamic parameters of hydrocarbon sorption by poly(silmethylenes) Academic Article uri icon

abstract

  • The sorption of C3-C7 n-alkanes in two silicon-containing polymers, poly(dimethylsilmethylene) and poly(dimethylsiltrimethylene), was studied in the 25-150C range by the method of inverse gas chromatography. For poly(dimethylsiltrimethylene), a partially crystalline polymer, the solubility coefficients S were greater compared to poly(dimethylsilmethylene). Based on the temperature dependences of the specific retention volumes, the enthalpies of sorption Hs and the enthalpy of mixing Hm of hydrocarbons in both polymers were determined. It was discovered that, for poly(dimethylsiltrimethylene), the Flory-Huggins parameters are lower than those in the case of poly(dimethylsilmethylene). It was shown that there is a correlation between the solubility coefficients and the (Tc/T)2 parameter. It was found that a modified UNIFAC method is applicable to the sorption of hydrocarbons in poly(dimethylsilmethylene) and poly(dimethylsiltrimethylene).
