HYDRODYNAMIC PARAMETERS FOR FISCHER-TROPSCH SYNTHESIS IN BUBBLE COLUMN REACTORS. Conference Paper uri icon

abstract

  • Gas hold-up measurements were made in small and large diameter glass columns with a molten paraffin wax as the liquid medium. In the small glass column, for temperatures between 230 degree C and 280 degree C, there is a range of superficial gas velocities where two flow regimes exist, and they are referred to as the 'foamy' and the 'nonfoamy' flow regime. This type of behavior was also observed in the large column at 265 degree C. The most obvious distinction between these two flow regimes is the presence of foam in the upper part of the gas-liquid dispersion. H. F. Bach and T. Pilhofer's empirical correlation provides a very good fit for gas hold-ups obtained in studies with perforated plate and perforated pipe distributors in the 'nonfoamy' regime, while the data in the 'foamy' regime can not be fitted by any of the existing literature correlations. A good agreement exists between gas hold-ups obtained in different studies in the 'nonfoamy' regime.
