Abstract The term umma is commonly used to refer to the global community of Muslims and to invoke the communal dimension of the Islamic confessional identity. However, while used frequently in both scholarly and everyday discourses, umma is employed without much attention to definitional precision. Consequently, umma has become a multivalent word with several applications, interpretations, meanings, and values.
