Development of a sensor suite for a flapping-wing UAV platform Conference Paper uri icon

abstract

  • This study investigates the attitude flight dynamics of a flapping-wing ornithopter. To do so, a custom suite of sensors is designed and constructed, incorporating conventional MEMS sensors used with fixed-wing and rotary-wing UAVs, as well as additional sensors needed to capture motions unique to flapping-wing vehicles. Lessons learned in the design process are discussed and recommendations are made for similar applications. Characteristic dynamics of the wing stroke are presented for straight and level flight, where time synchronous averaging was applied to enhance the signal to noise ratios of the periodic measurement signals.
