MRI of the cervical spine. Academic Article uri icon

abstract

  • MRI provides a noninvasive method of imaging the cervical spine in multiple planes. The excellent tissue contrast and sensitivity in the detection of desease which it provides make MRI a powerful diagnostic tool in the assessment of both anatomical deformity and tissue pathology. MRI undoubtedly has enormous potential in the diagnosis of both intraspinal and osteoarticular disease of the cervical spine. Nevertheless there are still disadvantages of this technique. Radiologists should be aware of the strengths and weaknesses of MRI relative to other imaging modalities in order to ensure that this important but expensive technique is used to best effect.
