The extent and shape of rectus sheath haematomas depend upon their relationships to the arcuate line. To emphasise the anatomy of the rectus sheath, two cases of haematoma inferior to this line, which were thought originally to represent serendipitous discoveries of pelvic pathology, are presented together with a case of rectus sheath abscess above the arcuate line. 1982 Royal College of Radiologists.
