Thermomechanical fatigue of ceramic matrix composites. Analysis of mechanisms at a microscale Conference Paper uri icon

abstract

  • As part of a larger investigation of the thermomechanical fatigue of ceramic matrix composites, this study reports stress analysis of unidirectional SiC fiber-reinforced glass-ceramic composites. The residual stress state developed during cool down from stress free temperature is studied. Several fiber distributions at the microscale are considered. The effects of thermal expansion mismatch are studied by considering two glass-ceramics, viz. Lithium-Aluminum-Silicate (LAS) and Calcium-Aluminum-Silicate (CAS), reinforced by Nicalon fibers. Using simple failure criteria at microscale, assessments of initiation and development of damage modes in the two composite systems are made.
