Design criteria for composite structures are discussed in relation to the critical events in the development of damage in composite laminates under static loads and under fatigue loads. For static loads, the currently used criteria, namely, the first ply failure criterion and the strength criterion are evaluated and the use of stiffness degradation criterion is discussed. For fatigue loads, a two-stage strength degradation model is proposed for reliability analysis.
