abstract
The nanoindentation technique was used to characterize the variation of the intrinsic mechanical properties of human lumbar vertebral cortical and trabecular bone. Significant differences in mechanical properties between various orientations were revealed. Longitudinal sections of vertically aligned trabeculae have a hardness and elastic modulus higher than other directions of cortical and trabecular bone.
