Coherent population trapping and Fano-type interferences in lasing without inversion Academic Article

abstract

• We discuss two mechanisms for Lasing Without Inversion (LWI), Coherent Population Trapping (CPT) and Fano-type interferences without CPT. While LWI based on coherent population trapping is lasing with a 'hidden' inversion, the second mechanism is a pure interference effect. We show that electromagnetically induced transparency in a V-type three-level system is based on this second mechanism and discuss the importance of Fano-type interferences in the four-level Raman scheme in the presence of ground-state mixing collisions.
