abstract
In many high-precison laser measurements spontaneous-emission quantum noise determines the ultimate sensitivity. We demonstrate here that when the experimental circumstances restrict us to short measurement times, the spontaneous-emission noise can be substantially reduced by the utilization of long-lived atoms as the masing medium. 1988 The American Physical Society.
