abstract
It is shown that even in the collision dominated region, atomic absorption in a lambda quantum beat laser can be completely or partially cancelled. The cancellation is due to the atomic coherence between the two lower levels, which is realized by using a Raman process or a microwave field. In the Raman process case, complete cancellation is possible. In the microwave case, even with up to 80% population in the lower levels, laser gain is predicted. 1990.
