• We present a theoretical analysis of the gain properties of a four-level active medium without population inversion in the presence of a pulsed Raman field. Our objective is to provide a theoretical framework for the interpretation of experimental results such as those obtained recently by Gao et al., Optics Comm. 93 (1992) 323. 1993.
