Fluctuations in mode locked single-mode laser oscillation Academic Article uri icon

abstract

  • In a previous paper the semiclassical theory of single quasi-mode laser operation with the laser cavity weakly coupled to the outside was developed. The coupled multi-mode equations of motion for the radiation field were combined to give a single equation for a quasi-mode or a Fox-Li mode of the cavity. This equation had the same form as that found in the usual (quasi-mode) theory except for an additional term which involved the initial conditions. In the present paper we examine the sense in which these multi-mode equations, which do not include the cavity dissipation as a phenomenological loss mechanism, still lead to and imply a fluctuation-dissapation theorem, and demonstrate that the extra term mentioned above represents the effective noise source associated with the damping of the field in the laser cavity due to the partial transparency of the end mirror. It is also shown that the noise sources associated with the actual dissipation of the radiation field in the medium and this effective noise source are simply additive and do not interfere with each other. 1973.
