abstract

  • The process of above-threshold ionization of atoms is modeled by dividing it into two parts: An effective interaction that just lifts the electron into the continuum and a final state interaction between the electron and the laser field that is described by the Volkov solution. With an arbitrary unspecified effective interaction, the model readily exhibits peak switching and a reduced index of nonlinearity of the first peak. With the assumption of appropriate boundary conditions, peak suppression is obtained owing to the ponderomotive force. The consequences of modifying some of the assumptions that underlie the model are discussed. 1987, Optical Society of America.
