abstract
The problem of optimal control of a pull model of manufacturing systems is examined by studying a fluid model of a flowshop, with buffer holding costs non-decreasing along the route. The system is subject to a constant exogenous demand, thus incurring additional shortfall/inventory costs. The objective is to determine an optimal control which minimizes the sum of buffer holding costs and system shortfall/inventory costs, subject to an exogenous demand of constant rate.
