Approximate integral solutions for flood routing by the Muskingum method. Academic Article uri icon

abstract

  • Of the various flood routing methods, the Muskingum method is perhaps one of the most frequently used methods. The common procedure is to formulate this method as an ordinary differential equation and then solve it subject to given initial conditions. This study proposes an alternative procedure by formulating the Muskingum method as an integral equation and then obtaining the solutions. This is much simpler and is also applicable to nonlinear Muskingum hypotheses. For a nonlinear formulation the proposed procedure is applied to the inflow/outflow data reported by Wilson. A close agreement between computed and observed outflow suggests that the nonlinear Muskingum method is promising but requires more testing. (from author's abstract)
