Mud flows and sedimentation problems associated with a dam-break event. Academic Article uri icon

abstract

  • Failure of an earthen dam can be adequately simulated by considering hydrodynamic sediment transport and slope stability factor. However, the mechanics of sediment transport can only be described by existing equations derived for alluvial channels for lack of information regarding sediment transport under high shear stresses. In this study, the state of the art of earthen dam breach erosion is discussed and a functional relationship of the Einstein-Brown bed load formula applied and calibrated. Discussing the principles of dam breach erosion processes, the sediment outflow hydrograph is presented for the Teton dam failure, and suggestions are made for further research. (A)
