Some new perspectives on maximum entropy techniques in water resources research. Academic Article uri icon

abstract

  • Considers the Shannon-Jaynes principle of maximum entropy for discrete and continuous variables. Outlines the basic ideas and presents recent research results. Examines: 1)a histogram method to contrast the discrete and continuous modes, 2)mean log decrement and KL information (Kullback-Leibler), and 3)coordinate transformations and differential entropy. Presents a method of generating probability distributions starting from one basic distribution employing coordinate transformations. Notes the concept of "physical constraints" in contrast to "mathematical constraints".
