abstract

  • A new method for bridge pier scour prediction is derived using an energy approach. The method permits determination of the maximum scour corresponding to a flood flow of a given recurrence interval. The scour method uses the concept of an effective depth, which is the point in the flow above which the flow essentially has no downward velocity component and therefore does not contribute to scour. A formula for the maximum scour that is related to the velocity profile below the effective depth is given. The method was used to analyze the scour at a published field installation and gave very good results (R "SUP 2" =.924). (A)
