abstract
This paper develops a reliability model for an m n system subject to inspections and then illustrates it by an application to a specific example system. The effects of the length and regularity of the inspection interval on the system mean up time and the probability of success are studied. An important contribution of the paper is in illustrating the use of the device of stages in modelling non-Markovian systems. This method consists of representing or approximating the non-exponentially distributed state by a combination of exponentially distributed stages. This results in a model with constant transition rates which is easier to solve. 1977.
