abstract
The requirements for amplification in a Raman-type non-inversion laser (LWI) are compared with that in a laser operating on the basis of optical pumping. In the presence of collisional ground-state mixing a minimum population in the upper lasing level is necessary in both schemes, which is of comparable order. An essential increase of efficiency can be achieved, however, when lasing without inversion is combined with optical pumping. 1994.
