Development of New Approaches for Genetic Modification of Livestock

The ability to genetically engineer animals represents an extremely powerful research tool for studies involving both animal agriculture and biomedical science. Genetic modification (GM)of livestock will afford many benefits to animal agriculture and humankind, in general, by having the ability to more efficiently produce meat and milk (food), with limited resources. The potential impact and benefitof GM livestock is not unlike that already being experiences with GM crops including such traits as increased yields and disease resistance.In the past, methods for producing genetically engineered livestock have been extremely difficult andinefficient. Completion of this research will vastly improve the technology available for genetic modificaiton of livestock and help move this powerful tool from research and development to applicaiton where it can benefit animal agriculture, animal and human health and medicine.
