Hypoplastic description of the frictional behaviour of contacts Conference Paper uri icon

abstract

  • Hypoplasticity is often used for analysing soil-structure interactions via the finite element method. A hypoplastic description of the frictional contact between soil and structures of different roughness is needed in order to provide a consistent modelling of the interface behaviour. Following this requirement, a new contact model based on hypoplasticity is presented. It takes into account not only the pressure and density effects, but also the roughness of the structure surface. Furthermore, it enables the modelling of line contacts in 2D as well as surface contacts in 3D. In addition to the hypoplastic parameters, the proposed formulation includes the relative surface roughness and the thickness of the shear zone as additional model constants. The results of simple shear tests are compared with calculations using the new contact formulation. An example for the application in a boundary value problem is also presented. 2006 Taylor & Francis Group.
