abstract
Physical 1 g model experiments were carried out to study the interaction between subsoil, retaining wall and backfill. The paper describes the test set-up including special load cells to measure contact pressures acting normally and tangentially to the surface. Subsequently, 3D FEM computations are presented which simulate the physical model to investigate the influence of effects such as side friction and load cell flexibility. Measured and computed contact pressures are compared. Finally, advantages as well as disadvantages of the used load cells are addressed and recommendations regarding the physical modelling of soil-structure interfaces are given. 2010 Taylor & Francis Group, London.
