Religion and New Media Chapter uri icon

abstract

  • Understanding how new media (virtual worlds, the Internet, blogs, social networking, and mobile phones) are being used by religious groups, organizations, and individuals can highlight how social and behavioral changes are manifesting within the twenty-first century. It can be suggested that the prolific uptake of new media has had a direct impact on religious identities, communities, and practice both online and offline. For many, the use of new media enables them to engage with religion on a daily basis. However, it is also being argued that religious use of new media can impact upon users' traditional religion, attitudes, and behaviors.
