abstract
We present an approach to study the interplay between the surface and volume vibrations of nuclei with application to the isoscalar giant monopole resonance. The main ingredients are the well-known properties of the mean field and the curvatures of the liquid-drop energy surface. No specific form of a two-body force is assumed. The single-particle continuum is treated exactly. First results, obtained using a local Woods-Saxon potential, are discussed. 1985 The American Physical Society.
