On the transient response patterns of climate to time dependent concentrations of atmospheric CO2. Academic Article uri icon

abstract

  • A one level two dimensional energy balance model with explicit land-sea geography is tuned to fit the seasonal cycle and then applied to various transient response phenomena. The familiar example of step function increase in CO2 concentration leads to highly nonuniform response in the first few years but a rather homogeneous response after about one decade. It is argued that although this model only includes a mixed layer ocean, the mechanics of the damped diffusion mechanism would be such as to produce a homogeneous response even when a lagging deep ocean is present. -from Authors
