abstract
The mesocosms of the Marine Ecosystems Research Laboratory of Narragansett, R.I., USA have been shown to simulate biological and geochemical processes occurring in the Narragansett Bay. The studies in these mesocosms and the field and single process characterization experiments on laboratory scale which are often needed to validate or verify experimental results are discussed in terms of how relevant the exchange of particles, carbon, nutrients, oxygen, trace metals or trace contaminants across the sediment-water interface is for the understanding of biological and chemical processes occurring in coastal marine ecosystems, and for the function of the ecosystem itself. 1985 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
