abstract
Prodigene Inc. has produced bovine trypsin in genetically engineered maize and it has been found to be functionally equivalent to native bovine pancreatic trypsin. This is the first instance when a crop has been used for producing an animal protein for use in the manufacture of therapeutics. In this case it will be used in the manufacture of insulin. The protease enzyme is widely used in digesting or otherwise modifying therapeutic and other proteins.
