abstract
Two methods of determining the extent of organic pollution by means of permanganate oxidation in both acid and alkaline conditions are compared. Both are affected to an equal extent by concentration of dissolved chloride. The acid method was found to give more reproducible results. Discrepancies between values for the same effluent analysed by both methods are discussed in terms of the chemical make-up of the effluent.
