abstract
Results are presented of a study using immunotrapping detection assays and DNA-based identification methods for screening ginger rhizomes prior to planting in production fields. To determine the general applicability of potential detection assays, 102 strains of R. solanacearum representing races 1, 2 and 3 from Central and South America, Asia, Hawaii and the Pacific were characterized using reactivities to a panel of MAbs, bacteriological tests, and metabolic profiles. The genetic diversity of the local population was determined by comparing strains with restriction fragment length polymorphism and amplified fragment length polymorphism analyses. The assay is suitable for detecting the pathogen in wash water from ginger rhizomes and is intended for use in soil assays.
