abstract

  • The 1st International Submarine Races (ISR) for human powered submarines were sponsored by the Perry Foundation and Florida Atlantic University in Riviera Beach, FL in June 1989. The 14th International Submarine Races are scheduled for June 25-0, 2017 at the David Taylor Model Basin in Bethesda. Texas A&M is using a new two-person design for the team's human powered submarine propelled with contra-rotating propellers. The new two-person sub is being designed using current technologies. CD-Adapco's Star-CCM+ computational fluid dynamics software was used to analyze two configurations of the submarine hull. The two arrangements were side-by-side and inline configurations for the two onboard divers. The submarine is a propeller-driven two-person powered submarine with the pilots side by side. This will provide more power to provide thrust to the vessel. The hull is symmetric about the vertical and horizontal planes. The overall length is 144in., beam is 32 in., and the height is 51 inches. The new drivetrain consists of parallel drivelines converging to a rear gearbox with a contra-rotating propeller output.
