Defense assurance and attack understanding are the underlying philosophies which guide Information Assurance (IA) educators about the IA course content at the US Military Academy at West Point, New York. Educators that subscribe to the defense assurance philosophy focus on designing and implementing systems that adhere to predetermimed security policies. Taking information security into account requires dealing with an adversary who is intelligent, creative, motivated, and whose logic might not be readily apparent. Understanding the operational environment with security is much more complex than without it because of the difficulty of predicting the behavior of a malicious and creative adversary.
