abstract
The need for marsupial robots naturally arises in domains where micro-robots are used to explore remote locations. Two terrestrial examples of these domains are Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) and underwater robotics. A micro-rover generally cannot transport itself to the remote location without a serious penalty in time or power. Therefore, it is desirable to have a larger robot transport the micro-rover and perhaps serving as a base station, containing power recharging abilities and an intermediate communication link. The larger robot can also continue an active role in the team by providing additional viewpoints of what the micro-rovers are doing or their progress.
