abstract
2017 IEEE. In this paper, a contact-less broadband dielectric spectroscopy (BDS) system with a combined frequency domain (FD)/ time domain (TD) technique for 3-10 GHz frequency range is presented. The material-under-test (MUT) is placed in the middle of two radiative near-field-coupled ultra wide band (UWB) Vivaldi antennas which act as the sensing elements. To enhance the detection accuracy, a new baseband signal is generated by combining multiple up converted Gaussian signals. A calibration method, which is based on subtracting the output of system from a reference material (air), is also utilized, in order to solely detect the magnitude and phase variations caused by the MUT, and eliminate the effects of the transmitter, the sensing unit, and the receiver. The proposed system is tested for xylene, ethanol, and methanol, and the measurement results are verified comparing with the direct measurements of vector network analyzer (VNA).
