abstract
Future document preparation environments will merge concepts that traditionally have appeared in interactive editor/formatters with concepts that traditionally have appeared only in noninteractive formatters. The resulting interactive systems will remain oriented to printed documents but will incorporate more flexible document representations and increase the variety of document objects while not compromising the quality of the output. Merging these concepts requires relaxation of the tight coupling between the editing function and the formatting function of the what you see is what you get paradigm, but can retain a direct manipulation interaction style. The author considers these issues through inspection of the current research that is directed towards definition of these future systems.
