abstract
In cellular layouts, the changing mission of a manufacturing cell makes it necessary at times to reconsider the design of the cell. Before considering a re-layout or major addition to the cell, a first step should be the evaluation of the cell's current manufacturing capability and the projected production requirements. A case study is provided to illustrate the steps in determining a manufacturing cell's current capability and in identifying cost-effective alternatives to make the cell more flexible.
