"This is my church": Seeing the internet and club culture as spiritual spaces Chapter uri icon

abstract

  • The Internet and club culture represent new spaces of technological empowerment and creation. The Internet has become a canvas of personal expression, a place to learn and test new ways of being. This is exemplied by peoples attempts to create new spaces of social interaction on Web sites, in chat rooms, and through e-mail. With the rise of contemporary club culture, the DJ, like the Webmaster or list/chat moderator, has also emerged as a new artist/author using technology to create new social spaces. For the DJ,the true art lies in the mix (Manovich 2001: 134). As the club track Last Night A DJ Saved My Life by Indeep (1982) suggests: Hey listen up to your local DJ. You better hear what hes got to say Theres not a problem that I cant x Cause I can do it in the mix!
